Inquiry

Preface: In high school I wrote a research paper on the use of the atomic bomb, specifically in Nagasaki, and Hiroshima, Japan.

"Peace can be achieved through fear of retaliation with the potential of obliteration."
"Potential for obliteration through retaliatory force promotes peace."
"War is avoided when all parties fear obliteration from the other."

The atomic bomb serves its primary purpose as a weapon, and its secondary purpose as a war deterrent. Or, the atomic bomb serves its primary purpose as a war deterrent, and its secondary purpose as a weapon.

The notion that the atomic bomb is a weapon of mass destruction and a weapon of peace is a common trope in Manga/Anime.

ie: Gundam and Naruto (list is still being compilled)

In the Gundam series several attempts are made to send space colonies or meteors crashing into the earth causing catastrophic damage. The antagonists are the purpotrators of these plans and are often driven by the promise that they are just in instigating the "war to end all wars." (Colony drops: Gundam 0083; Gundam Wing; Gundam Seed; Char's Counterattack; etc.)

In Naruto the character Pain attempts to bring about peace by constructing a weapon of mass destruction which will end wars through fear of its use.
